Persistent rain at the 20th Anniversary NIRSA Soccer Championships rendered the fields at Reach 11 unsafe after the first day of play and forced the cancellation of the tournament this past weekend. The decision—which affected 96 teams, dozens of officials, hundreds of spectators, and many volunteer professionals—was not reached lightly and while it was not the outcome any were hoping for, ensuring the safety of all participants, officials and staff has always been paramount. We are truly sorry the weather impacted so many.
Options to mitigate the impact of the event’s cancellation are under review by Tournament Directors and NIRSA leadership. We aim to communicate these decisions to Team Captains and Sport Club Directors during the week of December 2, 2013.
Only once before in the 20-year history of this tournament has weather forced the discontinuation of tournament play. We are truly thankful for the teams, families, spectators, officials, volunteers, and institutions for their support of the NIRSA National Soccer Championships and the values they promote.
