3-Point Shooting Contest

Competition Format

Each shooter will have the opportunity to shoot five shots from each of the designated five spots. Four of the shots will be with a like colored ball and will count as one point, if made. The other shot will be shot with a different colored ball and will count as two points, if made. The different colored ball may occur at any time in the rotation of five. The participant will be responsible for removing the basketball from the ball rack, however, they need not rebound their shots or stack basketballs in the ball rack. Participants will have one minute to complete all twenty-five shots. If necessary, a tie-breaking round of 30 seconds will be used.

Separate men's and women's divisions will be sponsored for this tournament. This contest could be held at the local, state, regional and national levels (or a combination of the above). It is recommended that the first and second place finisher advance to the next higher level of competition.

Equipment

  • ten men's basketballs, two of a different color than the other eight (per basket)
  • ten women's basketballs, two of a different color than the other eight (per basket)
  • one stopwatch per basket
  • one clipboard per basket
  • one whistle and lanyard per basket
  • scoresheets and writing utensils
  • two ball racks per basket
  • appropriate bracket sheets

Staffing Requirements

  • one tournament director
  • one assistant tournament director (if necessary)
  • support staff to print results, update brackets, etc.
  • one timer/judge per basket
  • one scorer per basket
  • one person to stack basketballs on the ball rack per basket*
  • two - three rebounders per basket *

* Note: waiting participants can be used to staff these positions.

Eligibility Restrictions

Members of the intercollegiate basketball teams are prohibited from participating. Participants must be enrolled students or stationed at the military base s/he is representing. Professional basketball players are also ineligible.

Employees of the institution or military base should be allowed to participate if they are eligible to participate according to their respective campus or base rules. An appropriate professional in the Recreational Sports Department must verify the eligibility of all participants representing their instituion.

Facility Requirements

The number of participants will determine the number of baskets required. A basketball court with a three point line at the current National Federation distance (a semicircle with a radius of 19 feet 9 inches from the point in the middle of the free throw lane directly below the center of the basket) is required.

Individual Incentives and Awards

This will be a negotiated item between the NIRSA and the potential corporate sponsor. Suggestions include: travel stipends to the next higher level of competition, basketballs, court shoes, T-shirts, gym shorts, sweatpants, sweatshirts, gym bags, and sweatsocks.

Institutional Incentives

Incentives for an institution to host a state, regional, or national tournament could include: a monetary stipend to the recreational sports department, donation of equipment (i.e. basketballs and ball racks). In addition, a stipend should be awarded to the tournament director and any required additional professional staff. The cost of scorers, rent of facilities, etc., should be covered by entry fees, a grant from the tournament sponsor (or a combination of the above).
