NIRSA Region I Newsletter
SUMMER IS HERE!
If you are like me you look forward to the summer! This time of year usually allows us to unwind, relax, and travel. Then, before we know it, it’s back to work as our students start to arrive on campus for Fall.
I want to THANK YOU for giving me the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors. As the first year of my term comes to a close I am happy with the direction of our organization and very proud of the members within our Region.
Read through this e-newsletter and PLEASE if you have any questions my contact information is below.
Also, be on the look out for an e-mail from Peter Murray and the folks at UMass-Lowell. The committee that Peter has assembled is working very hard to make our Regional Conference in November one to remember. Committee chairs include:

CALL FOR FITNESS PRESENTATIONS PROPOSALS
Keith Kenney is the Wellness & Recreation Director and the Strength & Conditioning Coach at SUNY at New Paltz
NIRSA Region I Fitness Professionals,
As the Region I Representative of the NIRSA Fitness Committee, I wanted to encourage you to submit a presentation proposal by July 15, 2008, for the 2009 Annual Conference in Charlotte. It's an exciting year ahead as our region and our friends at UNC-Charlotte are hosting the conference, and it would be great to have presenters throughout our region on the conference schedule. As fitness professionals, we have the opportunity to hold a workshop or give a presentation in which we can provide CEUs/CECs to students and fellow professionals. Please keep that in mind when you
are thinking about what type of presentation to submit.
Each of the members has been assigned a region in NIRSA to communicate news and ideas and to send reminders or gather information. I look forward to serving you during the upcoming year, and please feel free to contact me if you would like to assist the committee in any way or if you ever have any questions or concerns.
Finally, please forward this information to your fitness professional if you are not the fitness and/or wellness representative on staff. Thanks and have a wonderful day!
NIRSA SERIVCE AWARD
Carrie Tupper is the Director of Aquatics at the University of Maryland
NIRSA Colleagues,
As another academic year winds down and most of us are reflecting on what are departments did this past year for the campus community, we must also think of our NIRSA colleagues and the contributions they may have provided the Association and the field of recreational sports. Please take the time to nominate them for the NIRSA National Service Award.
The NIRSA National Service Award is provided as a means of recognizing the outstanding contributions of individual members to the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. The award is intended to acknowledge exceptional performance or dedication, to encourage creativity and innovation and to establish a standard of excellence in professional achievement. Each year up to six awards for professional members and up to three awards for student members shall be presented.

Local Host Deadline Approaching
We are asking you today to consider hosting a Local Qualifier as part of the 2008 National Collegiate Golf Championship (NCGC). We would really like Region I schools to be part of our exciting and growing program. We believe this is an excellent opportunity for schools to participate in an officially endorsed NIRSA program give your participants a chance to compete on the national level.
The Program Details
A 2 person scramble event for collegiate and university amateurs, the NCGC allows golfers to compete for their university to see who will be the 2008 National Champion. The Championship has three divisions: Student, Faculty/Staff and Alumni/Community.
We are also providing all Local Qualifiers with a prize package valued over $800 per school and $80 per player. Our National Championship will again be held in Las Vegas November 7-9, 2008 and promises to be even larger and more exciting than last year where over 40 schools were represented. Check out this great video to see what the Vegas Championship experience will be like for your team.
REGISTER TODAY
Please take 3 minutes to register on line to secure your spot as a valuable host again in 2008. The entire program is detailed on our CGA NCGC Web page. We are looking forward to seeing your school participate in the NCGC program again in 2008. Portions of proceeds of the Local Qualifiers and the Championship will benefit the NIRSA Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that provides opportunities for students through professional development, research, scholarships, and educational resources. To date, the NCGC program has raised over $26,000 for the Foundation.
