What is a CEU?

One Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is defined as ten contact hours: 1 hour = 0.1 CEU. CEUs are the basis of how continuing education is measured for the Professional Registry.

The Commission awards CEUs based on the following criteria:

  1. Identify a Point of Contact - this person will maintain contact with the NNC Director of Education regarding session proposals, awarding of CEU's.
  2. Maintain Oversight, Consistency and Control - the point of contact agrees to maintain the standard of awarding CEU's based on the model of one CEU is defined as ten contact hours of participation.
  3. Provide Proper Learning Environment - the point of contact asserts that the event will maintain a proper learning environment appropriate to the CEU's being awarded.
  4. Ensure Relationship to Core Competencies - Each learning event is planned in coordination with one or more of the eight (8) collegiate recreational sports core competencies.
  5. Ensure Qualified Instructional Personnel - instruction shall be provided by a qualified individual(s) based on their education, experience, and expertise as related to the instructional topic.
  6. Identify Learning Outcomes - identify between one (1) and five (5) learning outcomes for each educational session or presentation.
  7. Ensure Appropriate Content & Instruction - Learning Outcomes will be taught with appropriate content and instruction.
  8. Provide Evaluation Mechanism - Provide an evaluation and assessment mechanism for each individual educational session or training activity that measures the success of learning outcomes.
  9. Conditional Information Transfer (CIT) - For NIRSA activities only, unless an 'Opt-out' option is exercised by a presenter, speaker, author, etc., all 'PowerPoint presentations, articles, handouts, videos, and digital photos, or other similar materials presented at NIRSA events may be used by NIRSA on a non-exclusive basis to further its Mission. CIT information must be communicated to potential speakers and educational session presenters through the proposal submission process.

How do I earn CEUs?

  • All CEUs obtained for initial application or renewal to the Professional Registry must adhere to the above criteria as well as be related to Core Competency Areas for Collegiate Recreational Sports Professionals.
  • CEUs will be accepted from non-NIRSA educational sessions as long as they meet the above criteria. The burden of proof is on the Registered Professional.
  • Academic credits can be transferred to CEU equivalents by taking the total number of classroom instructional hours and dividing by ten. For example, a 3 credit course that meets once per week for three hours for 15 weeks equals 45 hours of classroom instructional time. Divide 45 by 10 to achieve the 4.5 CEU equivalents.
  • Academic credits earned as part of course work for a degree seeking program (undergraduate, Masters Degree, or Ph.D.), when the degree is used to fulfill an eligibility criteria for application to the Professional Registry, cannot be used as qualifying CEUs.
  • To maintain your status in the Professional Registry, you must accrue 4.5 CEUs in the three years after your initial or renewal conferred date (with no less than 1.5 of those CEUs earned at NIRSA-provided educational opportunities).

Professional Involvement Credits (PIC):

Professional involvement is an important additional way for professionals to learn and stay current through networking with colleagues on committees, serving as association officers, giving presentations or teaching courses, conducting research and contributing to scholarly journals and magazines. PICs are not counted towards initial applications but will be part of the criteria for Registry renewals. The two categories of PICs are:

  • Leadership, governance and service
  • Education, training, scholarship and research.

CEU requirements for renewal application may consist of not more than 2/3 PICs. Of submitted PICs at least 1/2 of all PICs earned for leadership, governance, and service must come from NIRSA-related activities. PICs for education, training, scholarship and research may be earned from any NIRSA or non-NIRSA source.

The following PIC Principles were approved by the Professional Registry Commission:

  1. PICs are a subset of Continuing Education Units (CEU).
  2. Consistency in awarding PICs is important: 0.1 PIC = 0.1 CEU.
  3. Awarding PIC’s is not an end in itself (such as with CEUs), but rather recognition of involvement in activities that support the Collegiate Recreational Sports profession.
  4. Provides recognition that voluntary service that supports the Collegiate Recreational Sports profession is important.
  5. Provides recognition that voluntary service on behalf of non-profit organizations that serve to assist individuals and communities in need is important.
  6. Provides recognition that scholarly research that adds to the body of knowledge and provides learning outcomes to individuals engaged in research is important.
  7. Provides recognition that writing scholarly and contemporary articles, books, or book chapters that adds to the body of knowledge and provides learning outcomes to writers is important.
  8. Provides recognition that academic instruction provides learning outcomes to instructors and is important.
  9. PIC values assigned by the Collegiate Recreational Sports Professional Registry Commission to individual activities in PIC Categories A and B will be reevaluated by the Commission periodically. Renewal applicants to the Registry may appeal to the Commission concerning the amount of PICs assigned to individual activities.
