This workshop will demonstrate proper basketball mechanics and rules to participants as well as concepts used in officiating today's game. It will also provide methods to effectively train intramural officials on campus.

  1. Be able to develop a comprehensive basketball official's training program.
  2. Demonstrate proper mechanics and positioning used in two-person and three-person systems.
Developing and Assessing Learning Outcomes in a Recreational Sports Setting

This workshop will cover the background behind the assessment movement, how to develop learning outcomes and assess them, and a primer on what evaluators are looking for in an assessment program.

  3. Understand how to evaluate assessment efforts.
Community Colleges & Small Universities

Approximately 40% of NIRSA Members are working at a community college or small university. This workshop is designed to provide learning and networking opportunities for professionals working at community colleges and small universities. This workshop will cover the various aspects of operating a recreational sports department, address concerns and share ideas of those in a small school setting.

Learning objectives:

  1. Gain insight on balancing the many responsibilities of small school professionals.
  2. Be exposed to different strategies to manage a model campus recreation department on a small budget in a small school setting.
  3. Be able to identify strategies to overcome common challenges that community colleges and small schools encounter.

Southern California's weather and environment provide an opportunity for everyone to recreate year-round in the outdoors. Learn how to take existing programs, equipment and staff, make a few modifications and adaptations, and provide recreation opportunities for everyone to participate.

  1. Develop an understanding of adaptive recreation and the benefits of participation.
  2. Learn to adapt and modify programs and equipment you already have and how to train your staff on them.
Student Professional Development

This workshop is designed to assist future practitioners in professional preparation and development.  Students will choose from one of two tracks depending upon their needs related to immediate job-seeking skills or beginning career exploration. Interactive sessions by experienced professionals will provide an enlightening and motivating foundation and applicable tools for a successful conference.  A time to meet and share with the Student Leadership Team and  NIRSA Board of Directors, as well as an introduction to the Career Opportunities Center, presented by Star Trac.

Leadership Track Learning objectives:

  1. Be exposed to different leadership topics, tactics, and/or techniques; learn how to seek insight and mentoring from current professionals.
  2. Develop a strategy for career exploration and planning.
  3. Gain insight into measures that enhance both personal and professional growth.

Professional Track Learning Objectives:

  1. Become familiar with appropriate interview etiquette and key job-related skills.
  2. Develop strategies for success once the graduate assistantship or professional position has been secured.
  3. Be exposed to measures that assist with professional development and career advancement.

Investigating, Adjudicating, and Sanctioning the Intramural and Club Sport Student Conduct Case

This program will review the best practices for handling student conduct issues for Intramural and Club Sport Programs. The program will focus on investigations, the hearing process, decision-making, and effective sanctioning. The program is being presented by the Association for Student Conduct Administration (ASCA), the premiere association for student conduct issues.

Learning objectives:

  1. Discover best practices for Intramural and Club Sport Programs conduct administration.
  2. Learn how to help your intramural and club sport programs foster an increased sense of student ownership for their members' conduct and the reflection back onto the organization.
  3. Discuss adaptive discipline styles, assisting students in understanding conflict, and determining the roll of the advisor in conduct issues.
