NIRSA's National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day: February 22

Thank you for providing explanations of your NRS&FD activities and the pictures that documented them.  Following is a sampling of what happened on a variety of campuses across the country in 2008!
 

Miami University (Ohio)

MU celebrated NRS&FD by offering:

  • Free Group Fitness and Water Fitness Classes
  • FREE Day Passes to the Rec Center for all students, faculty, staff and community patrons.

North Dakota State University

NDSU held their first National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day. The activities they offered were:

  • Free Blood Pressure Screenings
  • Drop-In Dodgeball
  • Pick-Up Lightning
  • A Bouldering Competition

Sports Trivia questions were asked throughout the day for students to gain a $5 coupon for Intramurals

Potsdam College (New York)

For National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day, Potsdam College held a cardboard and duct tape boat race in their pool. Students were given duct tape and cardboard to make the boats to race. 12 boats raced and about 100 students cheered on the racers.

Roger Williams University

Roger Williams University celebrated NRS&FD by offering their students a number of different activities.

  • Self-testing stations were provided for push-ups, curl ups, and flexibility.
  • Blood pressure testing, caloric needs evaluations and body fat percentage measurements were offered
  • Racquetball and Pool  Tournaments were offered in the evening
  • Open Fitness classes were scheduled all day

San Jose State University

Associated Students Campus Recreation at San Jose State University celebrated National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day by holding the "Backyard Boogie."  It rained on and off throughout the event which ran from Noon-2pm but they still managed to run out of food and served at least 250 people.
Activities included:

  • Free Turkey Dogs, Sunchips or Pretzles, and FRS Antioxidant Drink
  • Free T-shirts, cups, Fitness Class Passes, and all the Campus Recreation Schedules available. 
  • Soccer goals were set up and frisbees available to those who wanted to play. 

University of Minnesota

In conjunction with NIRSA National Recreational Sports and Fitness Day, the University of Minnesota hosted the Feel Great in 2008 Wellness Fair at the University Recreation Center. The fair was open to all faculty, staff, students, and affiliates of the University of Minnesota. From 10:00am-3:00pm, over 400 patrons attended the wellness fair and gathered information from the various vendors present.

 

Event Highlights:

  • Aikido Club demonstrations
  • Yoga demonstrations
  • Free flu shots
  • Body composition assessments performed by the Department of Recreational Sports free of charge
  • Health assessments performed by the Boynton Health Services free of charge
  • Massages offered by the Aveda Institute free of charge
  • The American Heart Association visited Rec Sports to help promote their Red Dress campaign going on in a local suburb to help bring awareness to heart disease prevention.
  • Cooking demonstrations by the Courtside Café

University of North Dakota

The University of North Dakota celebrated NRS&FD with a  “Day of Wellness,” focused on the seven dimensions of physical, social, occupational, intellectual, environmental, emotional, and spiritual.  Activities included:

  • Second Annual  Do you have the best on-campus job? contest in promotion of occupational wellness.
  • Environmental education included pictures of trash with facts all around the facility and bottle and paper recycling bins in high traffic areas.
  • Sudoku puzzles were also made available in social areas to stimulate intellectual wellness.
  • Tai Chi Chih was offered for members and group exercise classes such as Step It Up!
  • Climbing Wall twister was offered in the evening this year as well.
  • A new program for campus, Night Life at UND, began for healthy socializing.

University of Oregon

UO Rec Celebrated National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day with the following activities:

  • Show how URock on the ROCKWALL
  • Splash and create waves in the POOL
  • Tennis Workshop
  • Step Up! Walk for a Healthy U - Walking group
  • Get your grove on with Jackie’s Hip Hop
  • Group Cycling Ride
  • Celebrate the Positive Benefits of Recreational Sports, Fitness and Wellness

University of Tampa

The University of Tampa celebrated their 3rd Annual Fitness Week Celebration of NIRSA Recreational Sports and Fitness Day. 
Activities included:

  • IronMan contest (leg press and bench press). 
  • Volleyball aces serving contest
  • Free blood pressure screenings to win a free massage.

University of Tennessee

The University of Tennessee celebrated NRS&FD by offering several activities including a bench press competition sponsored by Legend Fitness.  The bench press competition drew crowds with 34 participants, two nationally recognized bodybuilders, three local media outlets, and many student spectators.
In addition they offered:

  • Flashback Game Night
  • Game Area Tournament and Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament
  • Badminton Tournament

Wichita State University

Wichita State participated in their FIRST ANNUAL National Recreational Sports & Fitness Day on Friday, February 22nd.
They offered:

  •  Free Chair Massages
  • Free Healthy Snack (yogurt) and a drawing to receive a free ipod
  • Publicized upcoming events - Health Fair & intramurals.
