Board of Directors Application Information

Overview

The NIRSA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that supports the mission of NIRSA. It publishes the biannual Recreational Sports Journal and provides opportunities through professional development, research, scholarships, and educational resources.

In cooperation with NIRSA, the Foundation Board is dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of the collegiate recreational sports community and to maximizing that community's impact on society.

The Foundation Board is responsible for management of the student and professional scholarship selection process, selection of the Recreational Sports Journal Editor-in-Chief, fundraising campaigns, and fundraising activities at the NIRSA Annual Conference, including the t-shirt competition, quilt sale, golf tournament and community service project.

A position on the NIRSA Foundation Board of Directors is an honor and a privilege. With a position comes responsibility to fulfill duties and obligations in the highest professional manner, while upholding the mission, goals, objectives, and ideals of the Board.

NIRSA Foundation Board Member Expectations

NIRSA Foundation Board members have the following duties, functions, and requirements but are not limited to:

  • Maintain current, active NIRSA membership in the Professional or Professional Life category throughout the term
  • Commit to serve a three (3) year term of office
  • Participate in scheduled teleconference meetings
  • Participate in Midyear (Fall) and Annual (April) Board meetings (face-to-face)
  • Provide confirmation or acknowledgment from supervisor and home Institution (employer) of support for volunteer service
  • Attend and participate in all meetings of the NIRSA Foundation Board regardless of type and medium
  • Manage the requirements of a volunteer leader with the expectations associated with one’s primary job responsibilities
  • Participate as a member of NIRSA Foundation Board work teams
  • Engage and educate NIRSA members on the purpose, functions, and initiative of the Foundation Board
  • Financially support the NIRSA Foundation through personal giving
  • Represent the NIRSA Foundation Board at various NIRSA functions, as appropriate
  • Review and approve the proposed NIRSA Foundation annual operating budget
  • Prepare and deliver an annual report to the membership

NIRSA Foundation Board Member Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications necessary to be considered as a NIRSA Foundation Board member:

  • Current Professional, Professional Life, or Emeritus membership as well as 5 consecutive years of membership immediately prior
  • Experience in fund-raising capacities
  • Service to the NIRSA in a volunteer capacity
  • Commitment to attendance at the NIRSA Annual Conference

Preferred Qualifications for a NIRSA Foundation Board member:

  • Exceptional oral communication skills as demonstrated by NIRSA presentations
  • Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by responses to required questions
  • Previous experience on a board and an understanding of how formal meetings are conducted including the use of Robert's Rules of Order and Parliamentary Procedures
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and trends in higher education
  • Ability to listen to differing viewpoints, process and analyze information, assess multiple factors, and facilitate a productive process in order to make informed and broad reaching decisions

The NIRSA Foundation Nominating Committee will propose a slate of candidates to the current Foundation Board.
